Named by G.E. Howard in 1913. Oates, Captain (Capt. Oates served with the Inniskilling Dragoons and was a member of the British Antarctic Expedition under Captain R.F. Scott (see Mount Scott).) Official name.

First ascended in 1924 by Alfred J. Ostheimer, M.M. Strumia, J. Monroe Thorington, guided by Conrad Kain. Journal reference CAJ 16-92.
