Located on the continental divide in the Fraser River Valley south of Mastedon Glacier. on the border of Jasper & Mount Robson parks, Alberta/BC border. Major headwaters Athabasca & Fraser rivers.

Named by Arthur O. Wheeler in 1922. Wheeler thought that the mountain resembled a mastodon (an extinct elephant-like animal that lived in what is now Canada). Official name.

First ascended in 1933 by Rex Gibson, R.C. Hind, W.J. Watson, E.L. WoolfJournal reference CAJ 22-68.
