Named in 1961. The glacier which seems to hang on a narrow shelf above the steep cliffs which drop into the valley, was thought to resemble to the shoulder ornament which is part of some military uniforms generally worn by fairly high ranking individuals. Official name.

First ascended in 1924 by F.V. Field, W.O. Field, guided by Edward Feuz jr.. Journal reference CAJ 33-73, APP 16-153.
