Named by Morrison P. Bridgland in 1916. The mountain was named after Cumnock, Ayreshire, Scotland. Official name.

Cumnock was a village in Scotland and its name means "meeting of the waters." Two creeks which cut though the De Smet Range join the Snake Indian River immediately to the northeast of the mountain and this may explain why the name was chosen.
