Located 3 kilometres west-northwest of Mount Assiniboine at the head of Assiniboine Creek and at the head of Wedgewood Creek. Assiniboine Park, Major headwater Kootenay River.

Named by Interprovincial Boundary Survey in 1913. The mountain was named for its "leading" position. Official name.

First ascended in 1919 by V.A. Fynn, guided by Rudolph Aemmer. Journal reference CAJ 11-47.
